I'm taking World History right now. While talking about a war this past week, my mind wandered and I began to question: What is the root of all evil? Discuss...(be serious)

You said "be serious". That basically doomed the thread to a series of jokes.
I still think greed is basically the root of evil. There's not a whole lot of things that can't be traced to it.

That's the first thing that came to mind when I tried to think of an answer.

The root of all evil: Mankind. Animals don't see good or evil. They see fight or flight. Humans created good and evil. First was most likely was bad. But, as always, there was an opposite. This probably came soon after.

That's the right answer. Good and evil is all based on perspective.

"The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil" is a bible verse found in 1 Timothy 6:10 that is often mis-quoted.

is there really such a thing as good or evil? I think that there are only conflicting interests where the dominant side labels their motives as good and the minority viewpoint's motives are perceived as evil

The root of all "Evils" is pride. Pride is characterized as self appraisal and self loathing. Humility is a narrow path between the two in which all true goodness lies. Good and Evil are based off of anything that is destructive or helpful to any conscious thing in the universe. (anything that can grow on it's own [microorganisms and plants on up in the levels of sentience]) if a relationship is parasitical and the parasite is something of higher sentience, then the action is more on the "evil" side of the spectrum. If something is justified and helps all things out in the long run, then it is said to be more on the "good" side of things. Humans are only higher portions of the spectrum of sentience, which is not directly nor inversely related to the Good and Evil spectrum. Therefore, as well with the freedom of choice, Humans cannot be directly characterized as to being anywhere on the spectrum of Good and Evil.

How can you argue with that logic...
