Chapter 5: Shimpi Island The boat was tiny. All seven rangers seemed disappointed by the little wooden fishing boat waiting for them at the docks. They had been expecting a grand ship to take them on their way to the island, but this was all that they had received. However, word appeared to have got round Danballton, and large crowds gathered next to the sea to wave the team off. It had been a very hectic morning for Satchu. First of all, he got up late, and, to make matters worse, realised that he must have fallen asleep packing the night before. He then rushed through breakfast and raced to the docks to find that he was the last one to arrive. Father Masu looked scornfully at his bag as he approached. “What is that for?” he asked, pointing at the case. “My clothes,” Satchu explained breathlessly. “Where’s yours?” “You won’t need that…” Masu replied. “We take one set of clothes only. It keeps us able to move around easily.” “Excuse me?!” Satchu exclaimed. “We can find a river to wash them in,” stated Seiti, stepping forward. “Do not worry, Satchu, we shall stay clean on Shimpi Island. Although, I have a feeling that that will be the least of our worries.” Satchu looked curiously at Seiti, but the Mayor spoke before he could inquire. “Listen up,” he called over the babble of the crowds. “You have been briefed. You have had many years of training. Now it is time for you to leave Danballton and start your journey. Good luck.” A small, dark-haired man climbed into the boat and settled next to the oar handles. He then looked expectantly over his shoulder at them. Satchu exchanged a look with Aridian, then deposited his case with Kami and climbed into the boat. No one spoke during the hour long ride. They all sat huddled together, to warm, as the temperature had dropped alarmingly when they entered the mist. The boatman was still purposefully keeping rhythm, and Satchu wanted to know how he knew the way, even through the grey clouds. However, the silence seemed oppressive , and he did not want to be the one to break it. Ten minutes later, Father Masu pointed forward and said, “Look.” The occupants of the craft stirred, some having fallen asleep. They all squinted through the mist. A dark shape was emerging through it. Satchu instantly knew it was Shimpi Island. As they progressed further, tall, shadowy trees appeared. “Look,” Thei said suddenly. “Buildings.” Everyone followed the direction of his pointing finger, and, sure enough, they saw rooftops through the gloom. “Mystifying,” commented Father Masu. The boatman guided them onto a small cove. They all got out onto the sand and looked around. The mist here was so intense that the sides of the cove were invisible. Satchu looked back, wanting to thank the boatman, but he was already gone.

Interesting, but where exactly is it? Do only four set off on their journey from the town?

I have no idea were it is on Earth. I try to keep it as close to Stick Ranger as I can, but I think all seven will continue after the Town.

Sorry about the wait. Chapter 6: The Town Eventually, the rangers found a rough pathway up the side of one of the hills surrounding the beach. They still could not see ten feet in front of them as, panting slightly, they made it to the top and found a road. About five minutes walking down it, buildings loomed out of the mist. A row of one-story houses were lined each side of the track. Curious, they approached the nearest, and found it was constructed of wood, with a thatched roof. Satchu guessed that there had once been windows and a door, but had long since been boarded up. “I wonder who built these…” said Aridian, breaking the eerie silence. Everyone jumped, and seemed to mentally shake themselves. The team continued to explore, and soon Masu found a building larger then the rest, with less secure-looking boards over the door. “Satchu! Come here a moment!” he called. Satchu walked over, and Masu instructed him to punch through the wood. He began his barrage, and everyone gathered around him, careful to avoid the bits of flying wood. Eventually, he broke through and took off his gloves. They all peered inside the opening. All they could see was a single large room. It was completely empty, except from a counter stretching in front of the far wall. Satchu approached it, the old wooden floorboards creaking under his feet and throwing up plumes of dust. As he reached the counter, Satchu saw cabinets behind it that he had previously assumed were the wall. The glass doors were extremely dusty and grimy, so he leant over the counter to wipe some off. It collapsed. Satchu was suddenly falling, then stopped. Lying on the floor, he looked around and saw bits of wood everywhere. The part of the counter that he had leant on had rotted, and so it totally disintegrated under his weight. The others were visibly shocked, and Kaido rushed forwards to check his well-being. Satchu dragged himself to his feet, and wiped the cabinet glass door clean. There was nothing inside, but slots in the back. He then moved along to the other half, and saw dusty old books. He squinted ever closer, trying to discern the titles on the covers. They were very old and dirty, but he managed to see the word “Street” on one, and several others had “Grassland” on them. When he tried the door, it did not move. Suddenly, he noticed a long row of smaller slots along the bottom, stretching the cabinet’s entire width. “Incredible,” Seiti murmured. “Come on, let’s explore another one.” Next door, they found another room exactly the same, except this cabinet was full of bottles. Once again, they could not open the cabinet, but the row of slots was there also. Those were the only ones the team could enter, and finally they reached the end of the buildings. The path however, continued, disappearing into the mist. They looked at each other, nodded, and walked forwards.

so far, so good. This is a capturing story, you've done well. This so far could TOTALLY be the case, although the mist I'm unsure of. Great job, keep it up.

You have the books, and the bottles (which I assume are health), but no weapons.

I agree with the dude above, another dude should join and they should split up (or get separated) aridian and the whipper already seem like enemies.

You guys are reading my mind. Anyway, it's fight time! Chapter 7: Opening Street The track narrowed as they walked, and the trees either side became denser and tangled with strange plants with many long, sharp thorns. “Is it me, or is the mist clearing?” Thei mused. He was right. The clouds of mist were definitely thinning as they progressed. A shape loomed suddenly out of the grey. A large white circle standing on two short brown legs. It was as tall as any of the rangers. And it was moving slowly towards them. They stood there, rooted to the ground in shock, as the beast ambled ever closer. It seemed to be glowing a bright green; producing its own light. Suddenly, features became visible. A line for a mouth. Two massive eyes. It drew ever closer, until the thing was standing right in front of Satchu. Without warning, an arrow sailed over their heads. It struck the monster in the eye, and it screamed in agony. They all looked back to see Kaido drawing another arrow. She looked up, saw them staring, and shouted pointedly, “Well, at least someone’s realised we have weapons!” before firing again. Satchu approached the enemy and raised his fists defensively. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Aridian drawing his sword. He punched the middle of the enemy as hard as he could. It was a strange sensation, as his fists bounced seemingly harmlessly off the creature’s skin. However, a spurt of blood from its top told Satchu all he needed to know. He attacked again and again, getting in his stride as Thei started firing his gun. All too quickly, the fight was over, and the monster lay on the floor, and dissolved before their eyes. The adrenaline was pumping through Satchu now. He wanted to find and kill more of the creatures, and so, without a word, he moved forward, along the path. The team encountered more of the enemies, including a single blue one, which took longer to take down. When they reached the end, Father Masu noticed a small signpost hammered into the ground. There was just one word etched into it. “Next.” The group didn’t need to speak. They simply readied their weapons, and proceeded into the unknown.

I love the dark take on Stick Ranger, much heavier than Doomish's take or the RPG's take. It makes it almost like a form of horror story.

Still, progress is slower than I would like. Chapter 8: More Enemies The mist somewhat cleared again soon after they passed the signpost, and once more they could see glowing enemies slowly approaching. However, when they killed the first, a small gold object shot out of its body. They avoided the strange item until they had cleared the current part. Afterwards, all seven people gathered around the object, which was lying on the ground. “It looks like a coin,” noted Aridian. And he was quite right. The coin had no design, but it was perfectly round. “Incredible,” breathed Father Masu. “I wonder who made it.” “The same people who built the town, I expect,” commented Kerhi impatiently. “Can we get going?” “Yes,” replied Masu, and he bent down and pocketed the coin. The rangers came to another sign at the end, and walked past it again. In the next section, the team came across a red version of the enemy they had seen so far. Satchu, without thinking, went straight up to it and started punching. The rest joined in, but the enemy’s skin was tougher than they expected. The monster struck with two yellow arrow-head shaped beams of energy. Satchu had the shortest range of his attack and got the full force of the arrows. Winded and reeling from a searing pain in his chest, Satchu kept punching until the enemy fell. But then, the pain came in greater force, and he had to slump down o the ground, while motioning to the others to go ahead without him. Aridian and Kaido stayed, however. The latter gave him a quick check over, and concluded that no bones were broken. The rest of the group returned shortly, with Father Masu leading them, a triumphant look on his face. He was carrying a small white object and another staff. Masu bent down next to Satchu, and handed the white thing to him. “Eat this. I’m sure you’ll feel better,” he smiled. Satchu took it and found that it was a rice cake. As he ate, the pain in his chest receded, and the feeling of exhaustion was washed away. Satchu stood up, feeling much more confident. “Where did you find that?” he asked, indicating Father Masu’s second staff. “An enemy dropped it,” he replied. “I think it is much more powerful than my old one. Watch.” He directed the point of the staff at a boulder nearby. The case of light that formed around it was now amber. The boulder then was crushed.
