We need a flying unit. Why? I suggest something titled along the lines of an...
Angel: When we go for an "all ground" type of party, such as swordsmen and whippers, people most often get owned via air due to being out of reach... So... Imagine say, A FLYING Class.
I already know what your thinking (maybe): "Oh, that would be fair, because none of the ground units could get to you."
So how bout giving this "Angel" A Sword? Which means you would have to be right next to something to attack it, contradicting this height thing.
However, you could say: "But then No one would ever choose a swordsman."
Thing is, if it flies, its not protecting the weaker units below, and if it wants to, it has to be on the ground. Plus, we could give it less damage than a swordsman.
Also, it doesn't have to have a sword, perhaps it could have something more... appropriate. Like a mace or halo or... something.

Sorry, but Angels just aren't Stick Ranger. Perhaps something with an "er" on the end like... Flier/Flyer?

flyer is good. for weopon it coung be a circle (called ring or halo) and it has a range of 25ish. you know zeldas c stick left or right, well if yo dont it could be a magical burst (?)
short range maybe same att as gladiator or lessish the attack could look like a zigzagy line in a semicircle around the ring in the direcion of the enemy
some weopens:normal fire normal range, circle stays for a bit ice, normal range, slow 20% thunder longe points (longer range) high att variation as w/ normal thunder spike still has to get close but the att is like spike whips mp att poison poisons light same range, sends out balls that home spike and light projectiles continue for 100 range (units, pixels?) i like this, i wanted a flying class but mine wasnt as good

Flying units are part of the challenge of the game, not at all something to be sidstepped. And that's why there are mixed parties. And flying classes just kind of break the basic mold of SR...

I am not as concerned about introducing the concept of a flying class as I am about controlling its movement.
If artificial intelligence is kept off, how would the flying class ("Angel," "Flyer," or whatever it may be) behave? Would it hover 10 pixels off the ground directly underneath it? Would it fall to the ground directly underneath it?
If artificial intelligence is turned on, how would the flying class behave? Would it fly horizontally to the enemy horizontally closest to it? Would it actually fly along the shortest path between it and the enemy to the closest enemy as determined with Pythagoras's Theorem?

Plus, they aren't out of your reach if you use a sniper, gunner, or magician...

Another Idea I guess instead of free-flying all over the map, perhaps more of a hovering ability would be better, again, combined with a disc or halo-like weapon. And perhaps if the "Halo" weapon did a complete ark going through multiple enemies... more of like a boomerang.
If it hovered just a little bit off the ground (terrain based: e.g. 10 pixels + Height of ground from the base of map under you = Height off the ground. Basically your always 10 pixels off the ground.) Then most ground enemies would be able to hit it and it would be a bit more effective towards air.

i liek free flying better, it could just move to the closest enemy i dont see a problem
