The matrix is a bit confuzzling. I think its just for those slow-motion fight scenes.
If trinity was the two, couldnt a random guy in the matrix say 'Im the 4564!'. It just wouldnt work.

Well....
Its about this matrix (CG world), built by robots which have taken over the earth. The humans covered up the sun so they cant use solar power, so they harvest humans for electrical energy. Theres this guy in it who is taken out of the matrix by these people and they fight the robots.
But, basically, its about some cool slow-motion fight scenes which take place in the matrix.
