The man stands. He stands at the edge of darkness, of evil, of the home of all those mutated things. He watches as they crawl across the chasm floor on twisted, shattered limbs. He hears the scuttles of them all around, in the shadows, in the branches of those few dead trees, in the ruins of once-great cities. He hears the massive footfall of monstrous things deeper in. As he looks around, seeing what Earth has become, he accepts his fate. He picks up his beaten, battered rifle and takes a stumbling step forward. He loads his rifle. He staggers into the shrouded quarry, and they attack. As he unloads his last few bullets, he accepts the End. And with his end, comes the End of humanity. The darkness now has control of the Earth. It reaches out and chokes out the sun, the stars, the planets. The Earth collapses in on itself, the darkness has complete control. This is The End.

That's a nice passage. Do monsters refer to humanoid beings, or to National Socialist German Workers, or something/someone else?
I'm assuming "humanoid beings"...
That's a nice monochrome image, too.
