Badges are indicators of achievement. There are many different badges, the official ones having been made by the forums' graphic artist, Swearingworth, and the unofficial ones made by various users.
The official badges have to be earned in one way or another. For instance, you can get the Late Owl Badge by providing a screenshot of one of your posts made at 11:59pm (a.ka. 23:59), or you can get the Active badge by being online for a majority of your membership.
When you have made an achievement, you ask a staff member to provide you a badge. If they ask for proof of achievement, provide them whatever proof is necessary. They will then provide you your respective badge.
Some badges are a bit vague, such as the Knowledge badge, and people are unsure whether they have earned such badges or not. You generally will not see people wearing such badges since they are so unsure of having earned them.
Other badges are simply staff rank indicators, like the Admin badge. They can only be earned after having reached that position.

The badge consists of a universal resource locater (URL), just like your image. Copy and paste the URL into your signature space and surround the URL with [img][/img] tags, just as you would with any other image.
When you run out of space, notify a staff member and he will create a word which he can censor to become your collection of images.
