I'd say that castle gate is still the best farming level. (Although the lake is making me rethink my theory.)
The levels with the highest bounty are very hard, or they've got rocky terrain that would make your stickmen get stuck. Forest one and castle gate are the best farming levels, and I don't have to heal when I do castle gate due to the high amount of ongri on the level. (Although the same holds true to lake 1, and on forest one you don't get hit a lot.)

In 'Lake', you do need to use the INN after farming, with a cost of around 300-400.

Well, I knew that you can get much more in lake. But for Lake you have to be much stronger than for Castle Gate. In Castle Gate you can start running for money the first time you get there. But at this point in time you an not even finish the Lake stage, and you certainly won't get any money out of it. But Castle Gate is easy and autowalk does the job. Usually I'm surving the web, while my rangers do a screen and I only drag them to the next sign. That's why I'm always going to CG.
I just tried Lake again, and I think I can stand against the enemies now. It's a little bit risky, and the health bars of the Boxer and Gladiator are jumping one fourth down and up in no time. But I can survive it and I even can do the Boss (well, two characters are dead afterwards). But in the past it was completly unfeasible to do this for money. But you have to watch your characters. It's still very likely they do something completely stupid like trying to reach a fish at the other side of a block while slowly getting killed by tree.
About the Forest, well I knew that too, that you can get a good amount of money out of it. And I even did it even a few times. But you are very slow because you should only use your ranged characters against the mushrooms. And you need to drag your melee characters, because you need them against the snakes. To sum it up: You probably do two CG screens (without attention required) while doing one Forest screen (with attention required).

I added some values to the list for better comparison, in particular two entries that tries to calculate the effort for every stage into the equation. The first metric is just the number of stages in each level, so assuming you need a constant time for every stage in the game, thats your metric. The second one adds up the LP of every enemie in the level and devides it through the gold you earn. With that number, the smaller the better. I don't like selling the loot, because then I waste time going back to the village. That would be a point for the lake, but I get more money at the gates and I don't have to move the rangers from stuck posisions, so I'll stay with the castle gates for farming.

To sum it up: You probably do two CG screens (without attention required) while doing one Forest screen (with attention required). /meHmm. At level 30, I can run through Lake without haveing to pay attention to anything, other than dropping the rangers off at the EXIT sign. I make about 5000 per run, after I go to the INN (approx 800$). But with my stup that has 2 ONIGIRI'S card, I can run through for about 4200 with only 200 spent at the INN. If you have gold medals, they outweigh the total cost of healing your party, but only when you get about 30% extra gold. So... Chart for best Lake profit: _____ 10% up vs. 2 ONI cards | ONI card 20% up vs. 2 ONI cards | ONI card 30% up vs. 2 ONI cards | ONI card 40% up vs. 2 ONI cards | 40% up 50%+ up vs. 2 ONI cards | 50%+ up ¯¯¯¯¯ On another note, I find farming Seaside 4 a good venue, as you can get 7+ silver crystals per run. The fact that about 30% are LV2 increases the profit, so you can get about 1350 in loot per run, added on to the pure gold, which totals about 4000 per run, if you have 50% in gold increase. Alos, I have 30% drop rate for items and 50% gold increase, so the amount of crystals might vary depending on your set-up.
