hmm, i suggest that if he is gone for more than say, a week and a half without saying something, that you demote him, and if he comes back with a good reason then rehire him.

Sometimes, personal reasons crop up and keep you from this place. We have no need to fire a staff member that has proven themselves many times in the past.
Of course, if he is gone much longer we'll have to demote him anyway.
