When a large program loads, the first thing to appear is some kind of an image. When Microsoft Word loads, a rectangle indicating the name of the program, the image associated with the program, and all copyright information appears. After a while, the actual word document editor itself appears, and the rectangle disappears. That rectangle is the splash screen.
Smaller programs that do not take very long to load, such as Microsoft Notepad (it appears instantly), do not have a splash screen.
